INCUBATOR BASICS

Incubators come in a broad range of sizes from small ones that hold only three eggs to large room-sized commercial incubators that hatch thousands of eggs at a time. Practical incubators for home use hold anywhere from a few dozen to a few hundred eggs. Small incubators are generally table-top models with a lid at the top, and may be either forced-air or still-air operated. A large incubator is always forced air; it is built like a cabinet that opens at the side and has pullout trays to hold the eggs. Both table-top and cabinet units range from hands-on models that require frequent attention to digital units that handle everything electronically. The five important features of any incubator are:

• Method of turning

• Airflow control

• Temperature control

• Humidity control

• Ease of cleaning
